As a young teenager I learned a lot about house construction from my best friend’s father, a master carpenter, who owned his own construction business. During the summer months, I would work with him and his crew. The different project I worked on where: adding dormers, raising houses, adding additions on to homes and we even moved a house several blocks…. To me it wasn’t just hard work, it was an enjoyable education. The house I grew up in was a 100+ year old home, which needed a lot of updating and repairs, some of the projects I worked-on was replacing the roofing and sheathing, total new bathroom (gutting everything down to the studs and joist) which involved plumbing, electrical and a lot more. I enjoyed working with my hands, and learning how all the various systems in a home worked.
While going to college one of my part time jobs was working with a licensed electrician, where we installed new services, total re-wires, etc. I learned that I didn’t have to be afraid of electricity, just respect it. After graduation from college in the late 1970’s with disciplines in construction and engineering, I when to work for a consulting firm. There I designed building exterior walls, roofing systems and various other components, wrote the specifications, obtained bids from the various vendors, and presented the bid results to our client. After the contractor was awarded, I visited the site daily to ensure everything was going as I had planned.
Later, I got into commercial building’s water supply and fire supply systems and HVAC work. In the mid 1980’s, I got my NYC refrigeration license, which helped me with the total understanding of air condition systems and some heating. After that, I became a certified RPZ tester, which helped me understand the problems with cross-connections within a building / home. In the late 1980’s I became a certified water specialist. With that I designed water filtration systems for many NYC buildings.
